Thursday Report for Mar 17, 2011

It still keeps snowing in Whistler. I think we might be starting to reverse the snow depth in the Valley which would be right on schedule for the 3rd week of March.
On Friday I got Danielle on a snowboard for her first time. She did well and almost did my guaranteed 6 linked turns. She did 4 but ran out of hill for the last 2. She is over the hump so will improve real fast now.
We got to a snow depth of 398cm the other day so almost got to 400 which was almost bang on what happened last year, and the second biggest snow year in history.
This year we can ski almost everything and places you would never go in a normal year with the big snow depth.
The Ski Patrol set off a large avalanche above the Blackcomb Glacier Road which took out trees and actually crossed the road. It was the biggest one I have ever seen. The came in with a Snowcat and cleared the debris and snow off of the road before they opened the Glacier.
Looks like a little snow, clouds and sun for the next little while. Temperatures should stay OK in the alpine.

Danielle Shredding.

After hiking up to the Blackcomb Glacier you now have to drop back down a bit. The wind has done some interesting things with the snow.

The entrance to the Blowhole and traverse around the top of it.

Blackcomb Glacier

Our Blackcomb Glacier tour group today.

The avalanche. It is hard to see in a photo but you can see the lack of snow in the first chute. It carried to the right of the picture over the road I am on.
