Interesting week. It stayed very cold most of it until today. Big powder day on Sunday brought the whole world out. All parking lots were totally full again. They are going to have to do something about this or come up with some alternative. Sunday night the wind hit the powder so some slopes were quite wind swept and hard to ski and others had very nice skiable powder. The sun carried on after that so I decided to go for the Mariana Trench Badge on Tuesday which requires about 10,900 meters of vertical to be skied in one day. Got that quite easily. I decided since it was so cold to do it by riding just gondolas. Wednesday I went for the Mega Day Badge which is riding all lifts with RFID gates on both mountains in 1 day. Did that with time to spare as well. Wouldn't be able to do this with lift line ups though. I love a challenge.
Today was another big powder day. I barely got out of my driveway. It was quite nice powder until after lunch when the alpine temperature started to rise (inversion). It was super busy for a while for the upload and until they opened some of the Alpine. I can't figure out where all these people come from. Doesn't anybody work anymore? The highway must have been a bit of a mess as well so they must have been people already in the Valley. I was the only Host to take a tour today and it was probably the hardest tour in 19 years I have taken with bad visibility and howling winds. We did find some powder on 7th Heaven and Horstman Glacier but some of it was done all by feel. My guests were all troopers and made it all through no problem. I think I fell more then they did. The Alpine finally had to shut down with huge winds. At our hut you could hear the wind roaring as it came from the South. It was wild.
In the Valley we are starting to have troubles finding places to put all of the snow. The piles are getting so high they keep avalanching back down again.
Hint for tomorrow. The Alpine did not open on Whistler today so it might be epic when it opens, if the wind did not get at it.
More snow is expected into Saturday with a little colder temperatures. The sun appears and it might be quite warm on Tuesday. That will be a nice change and I can finally thaw out my toes.
