Welcome back for another round of the Thursday Reports. This is an exception, being a Friday but thought I had better post some info and photos of opening day on Whistler. I was getting a lot of texts and emails from people wondering what it was like.
It was terrible!, Just kidding, It was probably one of the best early season openings ever. A lot of people with wide grins on their faces. With a base of over 180cm it seems like January up there. Most everything is covered, so rock skis are not really needed. People were skiing out today even though it was still out of bounds. All runs around Emerald were open and most on the Red Chair side. Olympic Run is open to G2 (Mid station Village Gondola) with great coverage. There was light powder everywhere.
There were mechanical problems with the Village Gondola so the huge Village lineup took longer then normal to disappear. I hear it was almost back to the Village Square. Also there were scanning problems on a lot of the lifts and cash registers for the new passes. They need some tweaking. They are going to be working on that tonight so hopefully most of these issues will be resolved for tomorrow.
If you were wondering about WB+, it has been replaced with Epic Mix. It won't be up and running until the middle of December I hear. Update!!! Just had an email from Michael that says it is now working. WIll have to try it and see.
Not sure when the Alpine is going to open but it looks like it is ready. Maybe time to do some touring to get at all of that powder. Looks like more snow on the way so get up here and make some turns.
