Wow, what a crazy week. We had way more snow then we were supposed to which of course caused the whole of the Lower Mainland to show up. Rule number one is to not ski weekends and number 2 is to not ski powder days unless you get in line before 7am.
On Sunday the lineups set World records I am sure. I heard the Village lift lineups were back to the Olympic rings in Village North. The Blackcomb Gondola lineup started at Lot 2, went under Blackcomb Way, then down Blackcomb Way past Merlins to the Chateau Whistler and then back to the lift. A 2.5 hour wait. All the parking lots were full as well. We won't even talk about Creekside.
So we thought Monday should be fine, but of course it was another powder day. We got to the Fitsimmons Chair at 8am and found the lineup was back to Village Square. The good thing about the Fitz lineup is that it moves very quickly. We almost walked as fast in the lineup as we did to walk to the end of the line. We were on the chair in 20 minutes. We could not figure out where all the people were coming from as there were still lots of parking spots available when we parked in Lot 7. Anyways the snow was great and no big lineups once we got up.
Tuesday was a zoo again with lots of deep snow.
Wednesday the sun came out and we skied right onto the Fitz Chair. We found untracked knee deep powder in Symphony, as the chair wasn't open the day before. The only big lineup was at the Symphony Chair where a creative lineup formed. It was a ski magazine photo day. Just so beautiful.
Overall the skiing has been amazing whether it was deep powder or groomers.
I asked a Manager today whether or not they were going to extend the opening hours to 3:30pm as usually by this time of year it has already happened. She said they were still thinking about it. Also today, as it was a non event day, there were no lineups at all in the Village until 11am, when the Village gondola backed up a bit.
I must say everybody is behaving very well this year with the lines and the masking up. If we ever get back to normal I will miss making reservations for coffee and lunch in the lodges as there is no frantic searches for a table to eat at. Maybe this should carry on.
I hope the weatherman is wrong again as it looks like not much new snow coming in the next week but expect much colder temperatures after the weekend.
