It sure has been a cold week. It got down to -22C this week in the Valley so we have been burning a lot of firewood to keep the house warm. At least my truck still started no problem. It was even colder on the mountain until the inversion kicked in. Temperatures evened out so it was almost the same temperature in the Valley as it was up top. With the cold temperatures I only went up Friday and today. I think a lot of other people stayed home as well. It is not unusual for us to get a cold snap around this time of year.
Today I was sent up before 8:30am to go up Whistler. I snowboarded as the boots are warmer. Fantastic conditions and nobody there for about 2 hours. Then everybody got out of bed and arrived. Lots of beginners on the runs but the lift lineups never got very big. The sky was so blue, and with the sun out, it did not feel cold. Maybe it was because I had on extra layers.
One thing that has changed this week is that the restaurant reservations are back to the way it was last year. You book after 7am for the current day. You can't book the day before anymore. The tables are also spaced farther apart. Lower Pikas on Whistler seems to be used for the kids until some time after Noon and then the public is put down there. Merlins and the Wizard Grill have been closed to allow staff to help out up top. Lower Glacier Creek and Steeps are 15 minute warming areas. No reservations required, just a vaccine check. Symphony Chair and the Showcase T-Bar are now open.
There was a lineup of cars coming down from Base 2 today at the end of day. At least it kept moving, but very slowly. This is typical during the Holiday Season.
Usually between Christmas and New Years we have the busiest day of the season. Not sure it is going to happen this time with the cold temperatures we had and the day that New Years falls on. Maybe Sunday will be that day.
Looks like our weather and temperatures are going to get back to normal with new snow Saturday through Tuesday. Maybe quite a bit on Sunday. I hope everybody is planning to go home Sunday or Monday morning so I can get some freshies on Monday.
Happy New Year everyone and may 2022 become virus free!
