Thursday Report for Mar 11, 2021

This coming weekend will mark a year ago that the mountains shut down because of COVID. Hopefully most people will be vaccinated soon and we can get on with things closer to what they were before. In Whistler, and a few other places, the age range for the start of the vaccinations is a bit younger. Maybe when they get to my age group the same will apply. We must have a younger population here or at least we think we are.

Yahoo! We reached a 300cm base. I thought we might, especially with the big snowfall that happened last Thursday night. I got in the Fitzsimmons line at 750am on Friday morning and I was back to the Village Square again. The line did not move until 920am due to avalanche control mid mountain. Gary and me just left our gear in the line and stood undercover so we did not get soaked. Once the line moved we got on the chair in about 20 minutes.

Saturday was probably the busiest day this year and a new World record for length of lift lines. The Blackcomb Gondola line went down to the Fairmont Hotel driveway, down to Blackcomb Way, back to Merlins, then under Blackcomb Way over the covered bridge to the pay parking lots and then down to the skateboard park. I heard people waited 3 hours to get on a lift. Just nuts.

Once the weekend was over the crowds left, the snow dried out and we added some more fresh stuff as well. The snow has been lovely and dry this week. We seemed to get a lot of snow squalls and then the sun would come out, so a bit of everything. Temperatures on the mountain have stayed cool. The snow is starting to melt in the Valley but overnight it can still snow.

I heard some of the Vail Resorts like Vail and Beaver Creek are staying open a week longer then expected and that Breackenridge is staying open until May 31 which leads me to believe that the WB website is correct on our May 24 closing.

I think the Ontario Spring Break might be starting so watch for a few more people mid week.

From Snow-Forecast: Synopsis:

The flow aloft shifts more westerly as a ridge of high pressure slowly moves in over the province, with variable cloud expected and mild temperatures.

Through the end of the week this ridge of high pressure is expected to keep things dry and bring more sunshine to variable cloud as it stalls, with temperatures remaining fairly seasonal to mild under lighter winds as well. Some occasional flurries potentially return near the start of the week as the area of high pressure drifts eastward out of the region and an upper low approaches the coast, but things are still adjusting in this timeframe.

The trail up to the Blackcomb Glacier went at an angle across instead of straight up. Much easier and it felt quicker.

Another 29th Birthday and still skis like a 29 year old
